1. Check out your local scrapbooking store to see what activities they are offering. Many local stores have sales, but quite a few offer make-and-take projects, special workshops, or crop time just for National Scrapbooking Day.

2. Learn a new scrapbooking technique. You can do this all on your own. Pick up a scrapbook magazine and try a new skill. It can be something simple or complex. Now make a page layout using that technique.

3. Shop for a new scrapbook tool. We all have one of the latest tools on our scrapbooking wishlists. Indulge yourself this May with one on your list. Take it home and try it out on a new project.

For example, if you are concerned about the environment, save

name, age and the date on the cover or on a title page. Give
each photo a label with a title that tells what’s happening in
the picture.

Give each newspaper or magazine article a label with the name of
the newspaper or magazine, the date it was published and the
page number where you found the article.

Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to preserve memories for future
generations and anyone can do it. It’s also a great stress

When you think of scrapbooking you usually think of making scrapbook albums.  Have you tried using your scrapbooking materials for other projects?  These project ideas are great for scrapbooking with kids.

1. Decorate jars and use them as small storage items in your children’s bedrooms, like marble collections or collectible game cards.  Look in your scrapbooking supplies for stickers and rub-ons to embellish any size jar. Baby food jars and Mason jars work well for this project.

6.  Christmas ornaments make great scrapbooking projects for gifts.  There is no limit to the kinds of ornaments you can make from scrapbooking supplies.  Don’t be afraid to get messy and use glitter for this project.

Here’s a great idea for making a special ‘first haircut’ scrapbook page. Between the ages of about 12 and 18 months, a baby boy or girl may go for their first hair cut. You’ve probably seen that there are many children’s hair salons that offer special deals for a child’s first visit. They have a special chair, take a photo or even video the visit — and then later you take away the photo or video and a lock of hair as a keepsake. So why not create a scrap book page to celebrate this event in a special way!

Here are some tips to give the page a fresh angle. And of course these ideas could be re-worked for all kinds of different kids’ scrapbook projects.

Use Homemade Paper

For a unique background, try using homemade paper. You can make your own customized paper of any color and texture you want. This takes a bit of time and effort. Alternatively, try soaking a piece of card-stock. After a few minutes, crumple the paper a bit and then iron it flat again. This will closely approximate the appearance of homemade paper.

Painted Tissue Paper

Painted tissue paper can add a colorful flair to your child’s ‘first haircut’ scrapbook page. To paint tissue paper, punch or tear bits of tissue paper into various shapes. Then, using watercolor pencils and a wet paintbrush, thoroughly coat the tissue paper. Now dip the painted tissue paper in a mixture of scrapbook glue and water and place it on white card-stock.

Let the pieces dry completely. Use the dry colored tissue paper as a background, a border, or as a fancy embellishment.

Beading

Beads are another way to add color and design to the page. Beading can be as simple as gluing a few beads onto a scrapbook page or as complex as a sewn beaded design. When arranged in an abstract pattern, they can create a child-like effect — or place them carefully to make a fun title or artistic design.

Beads, micro-beads, and necklaces can be attached using two-sided tape or Xyron adhesive.

Make a Pocket

If you’ve kept a lock of your child’s hair, why not store it in a pocket? Pockets allow you take out and put back items as you see fit and replace them without damage to your scrapbook page.

The easiest pocket is simply an envelope. But pockets can also quickly and easily made by folding a piece of paper in half and then gluing three of the side edges.

Pockets can also be made from pieces of fabric sewn together. In this way, pockets can be virtually any texture, color, and weave to suit your required needs.

Trim your pictures to eliminate any distracting
background or foreground images. Use a corner rounder
to give your pictures a softer look. Pick a complementary
card stock color. Use the tape runner on the corners of
the back of the picture. Adhere the picture to the card
stock and trim the card stock to 1/4″ border around the
picture. Then adhere the matted pictures to your album
page with the tape runner. Matting will make your pictures
the focal point of the page.

Once your pictures are arranged on the page, journal the
day’s events or describe what is happening in the pictures.
Using your penmanship in scrapbooks is a great way to
pass on a piece of yourself to future generations.

Incorporate memorabilia into your scrapbook.

Mementos from an event or milestone are great scrapbook
embellishments. Some scrapbook companies even have special
pages that have transparent pockets to hold your treasures.

Don’t get stuck on finishing a page.

Many times you will look at your latest page and think
“there is something missing”. Don’t spend time staring at a
page that is 90% done, move onto the next page layout. When
you use a tape runner adhesive, it’s very easy to go back
and move or change a layout later without ruining anything.

Many scrapbooking products were designed by scrapbook enthusiasts, who saw the need for a product and filled it. Product designers can either license their idea to a larger manufacturer or take the plunge and start their own company!

Success stories abound in this industry about people who went from an idea to a multi-product corporation. And if you’re the next success story, prepare for profits! Of course, going it alone also means an investment of time and money, so be sure you have both before starting your company.

What types of qualities does a product designer need? Above all, creativity is the best thing you can offer. Perhaps you’ve come up with an excellent new die cut. How about inventing a new pair of decorative scissors? When you’re a product designer, literally anything is possible.

You need to find a niche that hasn’t been filled. Then do product research. See if your idea is feasible and what kind of investment you’ll need to make in order to bring it to reality. Use the library or Internet to locate information about your product. While conducting your research, you’ll notice that products with a good reputation or success story are easily located. So go ahead, submit your pages!

This is akin to being a freelance writer. If you think you’ve created an especially beautiful page, send a picture to a scrapbooking magazine. If they publish it, you’ve made it! If they don’t, keep trying.

Start out by subscribing to at least four of the major scrapbooking magazines. Some to consider would be:

When submitting your pages, you have two options. You can scan your layout and submit it through e-mail or you can make a color copy and send it through “snail mail”. If you make copies to send, your costs can add up, especially if you’re submitting to multiple magazines. Email might be your best option,

With each layout submission, you’ll need to include your name, address, phone number, email, and supply list. The supply list is important, as magazines will not publish your layout without one. If you’re working on a layout you think you’ll want to submit, keep track of what supplies you use and the manufacturer of each one. Be as detailed as you can!

You can submit the same layout to every magazine, but be aware that when one magazine publishes your layout, other magazines won’t use the same one. If you decide to submit, it’s also a good idea to take those layouts off of the popular Web sites, such as ScrapJazz.com.

Magazines typically keep layouts on file and will ask for them when the need arises for a layout like yours. You might be contacted months down the line, so try and be patient. Sometimes the magazines will say what types of layouts they’re looking for in advance. Check the magazines and their Web sites. Remember that most magazines are working on issues that won’t be out for months, so your Kwanzaa page may be accepted in the summer.

Just do it! I’ve heard from so many scrapbookers that they haven’t been published, but they “haven’t submitted as much as they should.” Write it on your To-Do list! Schedule a time to submit your layouts on a regular basis. It may seem elusive, but consider that the magazines need to fill space with as many excellent layouts as they can. So keep submitting!

If you are going to be published, the excitement will be great the day you get the call! Be ready for some down time while you wait for the issue to come out, and then it’s excitement time again! You’ll usually get your layout back when the next issue of the magazine is published.

If more than one magazine chooses to publish a layout, you’ll need to tell the other magazines that unfortunately, another magazine contacted you first.

Some magazines pay with product and others with cash. But the opportunity to put “published designer” after your name is priceless! Good luck!
